Common questions about functional medicine
- What is functional medicine?
- Functional medicine is a holistic, root cause approach to care. Instead of treating each symptom separately, it looks at how nutrition, sleep, stress, hormones, digestion, metabolism, genetics, and life circumstances interact to produce how you feel, then addresses the contributors that can actually be changed.
- How is it different from conventional primary care?
- Conventional care is well designed for diagnosing and managing disease, and it remains essential. The main differences here are time and depth: visits are longer, the history is more detailed, testing often goes beyond a standard screening panel, and nutrition, sleep, movement, and stress are treated as part of the plan rather than as an afterthought. This practice works alongside your primary care provider, it does not replace them.
- What does a first visit look like?
- The first visit is a long conversation. We go through your symptom timeline, prior labs and records, medications and supplements, family history, and your daily routine. By the end you should have a working explanation of what may be driving your symptoms and a short list of what is worth investigating first. Testing, when it is indicated, is chosen to answer specific questions rather than ordered broadly.
- Do I need a referral, and will you work with my other providers?
- No referral is needed to book. Care is coordinated with your primary care provider and any specialists you see, and anything outside the scope of this practice is referred out promptly.
- Are visits in person or by telehealth?
- Visits are telehealth only at this time, Monday through Friday, for patients located in Utah. In-office visits in Salt Lake City are coming soon.
