Low testosterone gets talked about almost entirely in terms of libido, but that's often one of the later symptoms to show up, not the first.
Testosterone affects muscle maintenance, energy regulation, mood, sleep quality, and metabolic health, not just sexual function. By the time libido changes are noticeable, other symptoms have frequently been building for a while.
Signs worth paying attention to include:
- Fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
- Loss of muscle mass despite consistent training
- Increased body fat, especially around the midsection
- Trouble concentrating or a general mental flatness
- Low motivation or a flatter mood than usual
- Reduced morning erections
- Slower recovery after exercise
Total testosterone alone doesn't always tell the full story. Free testosterone, SHBG, and estradiol often matter just as much, since two men with the same total testosterone number can have very different amounts actually available for the body to use.
Age-related decline is real, but it's not the only explanation, and it's not something to just accept without a closer look. If several of these signs sound familiar, a fuller hormone picture is worth having, not just a single number on a lab report.
